Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 20, 2026
This policy covers the MakeTheBoard website at maketheboard.com and the MakeTheBoard apps for iOS and Android. The apps display the same service as the website, so everything below applies to both unless a section says otherwise.
1. Information we collect
Account information
When you create an account we collect your name and email address. Authentication is handled by Firebase Authentication, which stores your credentials; we never see or store your password. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive the name and email address that provider releases to us. See section 4.
Content you create
Boards, scoreboards, participant names, scores, and any images you upload (board logos, backgrounds, and participant avatars). Uploaded images are stored on Cloudflare R2.
Purchases
On the website, payments are processed by Stripe. In our mobile apps, purchases are processed by Apple or Google and recorded through RevenueCat. In neither case do we receive or store your card details.
Usage and device information
Pages viewed, features used, approximate location derived from IP address, browser or device type, and similar technical data. See section 7.
2. How we use your information
- To provide and maintain the MakeTheBoard service
- To process payments and manage subscriptions and entitlements
- To send transactional emails (account confirmations, receipts, password resets)
- To respond to support requests
- To detect and prevent abuse, spam, and fraudulent sign-ups
- To understand how the service is used so we can improve it
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising or serve third-party advertising on the service.
3. Who we share it with
We share data only with the service providers needed to operate MakeTheBoard:
- Google Firebase — authentication and account identity
- Stripe — payment processing for purchases made on the website
- Apple and Google — payment processing for purchases made in our mobile apps
- RevenueCat — recording mobile purchases and telling us which plan you are entitled to
- Cloudflare — image storage (R2) and bot protection on sign-up (Turnstile)
- PostHog — product analytics
- Ahrefs Analytics — aggregate website traffic measurement
- Resend — delivery of transactional email
We may also disclose information where required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and property of MakeTheBoard or its users.
4. Signing in with Google or Apple
If you sign in with Google or Apple, that provider tells us your name and email address so we can create your account. We do not receive your password, and we do not gain access to anything else in your Google or Apple account.
Sign in with Apple offers a Hide My Email option. If you use it, Apple gives us a private relay address ending in privaterelay.appleid.com instead of your real address, and forwards our email to you. We treat that relay address as your account email. If you later turn off forwarding in your Apple ID settings, we will no longer be able to reach you, including for password resets and receipts.
5. Purchases in our mobile apps
Subscriptions bought inside the iOS or Android app are sold by Apple or Google, not by us. They handle the payment and tell RevenueCat that a purchase happened; RevenueCat then tells our servers which plan to unlock for your account.
To connect a purchase to the right account, we send your MakeTheBoard account identifier to RevenueCat. RevenueCat also receives the purchase details from the store, such as the product bought, the transaction identifier, and the renewal date. We do not receive your payment method or card details at any point.
6. Photos and camera (mobile apps)
The apps ask for access to your photo library, and to your camera, only so you can pick or take a picture to use as a board logo, background, or participant avatar. Images you choose are uploaded to our storage as described in section 1. We do not access your photo library in the background or read any photo you have not selected. You can decline or revoke this access in your device settings; the rest of the app continues to work.
7. Analytics and cookies
We use essential cookies for authentication and session management. These are required for the service to work.
We use PostHog for product analytics, to understand which features are used and where people get stuck. PostHog records page views and in-app events, and once you are signed in, associates them with your account. We use Ahrefs Analytics to measure website traffic in aggregate; it does not use cookies.
We do not use advertising cookies, and we do not sell or share analytics data with advertisers.
8. Public boards
Boards you make public are accessible to anyone with the link. Board titles, participant names, and scores on public boards are visible to viewers, and public boards may be indexed by search engines. You can make a board private at any time. Do not put information on a public board that you would not want to be publicly visible.
9. Data retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal data and boards within 30 days. Some records may be retained longer where we are required to keep them, such as billing records kept for tax and accounting purposes.
Deleting your MakeTheBoard account does not cancel a subscription bought through the App Store or Google Play. See section 5 of our Terms of Service for how to cancel those.
10. Security
We use industry-standard security measures including HTTPS encryption, secure authentication, and regular security reviews to protect your data. No service can guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect your information and to respond quickly if something goes wrong.
11. Your rights
You can:
- Access and export your data from your account settings
- Correct your account information from your account settings
- Delete your account and all associated data, in the app or on the website
- Ask us what personal data we hold about you, and ask us to delete it
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your personal data, including the right to object to processing or to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. Contact us using section 13 and we will help.
12. Children
MakeTheBoard is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page. Material changes will be communicated in the app or by email.
14. Contact
