How to Score Five Crowns

Five Crowns is scored like golf: you want as few points as possible. Each round ends when one player goes out and everyone else has had one last turn.

  1. 1

The player who went out scores 0

Every card in their hand was in a book or a run, with one card discarded.

  2. 2

Everyone else takes one more turn

Draw, lay down any books and runs you can, and discard.

  3. 3

Count what is left in your hand

Use the card values below. Wild cards and Jokers you could not use hurt the most.

  4. 4

Write it in the round's row

After the Kings round, the lowest running total wins the game.

A worked example

It is the sevens round, so sevens are wild. Dana is caught holding a 4, a Queen, a 7 and a Joker. That is 4 + 12 + 20 + 50 = 86 points, most of it from two wild cards she was saving for a bigger meld.

The lesson every Five Crowns table learns: a wild card is only worth holding while you can still use it. Late in a round, get it onto the table.

The Eleven Rounds

The number of cards dealt matches the wild card, so the rounds get longer as the game goes on. The deck has five suits (stars, hearts, clubs, spades and diamonds), ranks 3 to King, and six Jokers.

  1. Round 1

    3 cards

    3s wild

  2. Round 2

    4 cards

    4s wild

  3. Round 3

  4. Round 4

  6. Round 6

  8. Round 8

  10. Round 10

    Queens wild

  11. Round 11

    Kings wild

To go out, every card in your hand must be in a book (three or more of the same rank) or a run (three or more in sequence in one suit), with one card left to discard. Wild cards and Jokers can stand in for any card in either.

No More Lost Score Pads

A Five Crowns game runs long enough that the score pad gets buried under snacks, and the “who's winning?” question comes up every round. The sheet above keeps the game in your browser, so a locked phone or a closed tab loses nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

At the end of each round, the player who went out scores 0. Everyone else lays down any books and runs they can, then adds up the cards still in their hand: 3 to 10 at face value, Jacks 11, Queens 12, Kings 13, that round's wild card 20 and Jokers 50. Write that number in the round's row. After eleven rounds, the lowest total wins.

Eleven. The first round deals 3 cards each and threes are wild; every round deals one more card and moves the wild up one rank, so the last round deals 13 cards with Kings wild. The sheet above labels every row with its card count and wild card so nobody has to count.

Lowest. Points are what you are left holding, so a round where you go out scores 0 and a round where you get caught with a Joker costs you 50. The sheet above highlights whoever has the lowest total.

20 points if it is still in your hand when the round ends. That includes the rotating wild (the threes in round one, the fours in round two, and so on) and not just the Jokers, which are always wild and count 50.

Every other player gets exactly one more turn. They draw, lay down whatever books and runs they can, discard, and count the rest of their hand. Going out does not end the round for anyone else immediately.

Stars, hearts, clubs, spades and diamonds. The deck is two sets of 58 cards: each suit from 3 to King in every set, plus three Jokers per set, 116 cards in all. There are no Aces, twos or ones.
